Fatal Poughkeepsie police shooting death of Brian C. Czornyj – Obituary
Brian C. Czornyj, 36, was fatally shot by law enforcement during a confrontation on Fair Oaks Drive in the Town of Poughkeepsie on Thursday, June 5. The incident began when police were called to a home at 8 Fair Oaks Drive around 2:15 p.m. in response to a report that a man armed with a sword was attacking members of the Dutchess County Mobile Crisis Team.
When officers entered the residence, they found two men, one of whom had suffered a head injury. Czornyj remained inside the home and reportedly confronted police. During the encounter, an officer discharged his weapon, hitting Czornyj. Authorities said medical aid was rendered immediately, and Czornyj was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
New York State Police identified Czornyj on Tuesday, June 10. The incident is currently under investigation by the New York State Attorney General’s Office, with support from State Police. Additional assistance was provided by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and Arlington Fire Department.
According to his obituary, visitation for Czornyj will be held on Thursday, June 19, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home in Poughkeepsie. A funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, June 20, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Martin de Porres Church, also in Poughkeepsie.
The investigation remains ongoing.
