Fatal Linton stabbing and arson death of James “David” Higar – Obituary
James “David” Higar, 64, was found dead early Sunday morning inside a burning home in Linton, Indiana, with multiple stab wounds to his neck and shoulder. Fire crews responding to the blaze also discovered a deceased dog in the residence. Authorities soon launched a homicide investigation.
According to Indiana State Police, Brandon Criss, 39, allegedly admitted to killing Higar and setting the house on fire. A witness reported that Criss had arrived at his home covered in blood and showed him a photo of Higar’s lifeless body. The image, later recovered from the deleted photos folder on Criss’ phone, depicted a bloodied, naked man lying on a bathroom floor.
Investigators say Criss had ongoing tensions with Higar and had previously made threats against his girlfriend’s family. Witnesses also told police that Criss had tried to hand off a jacket and knife after the incident, claiming he believed he had killed someone.
After being located at a nearby gas station and taken into custody, Criss initially denied any involvement. However, upon being confronted with the photo evidence, he claimed the killing was a “hate crime” against Higar, whom he accused of being a child molester. Criss told detectives he wanted to face federal charges rather than serve time in state prison.
Criss has been charged with murder, arson, and animal cruelty. He is being held without bond at the Greene County Jail, with his next court appearance scheduled for November 5.
