Fatal Portsmouth building collapse death of Kelly Nevitt – Obituary

Kelly Nevitt, 15, lost her life in a tragic accident when a concrete landing collapsed during a graduation party at the Portsmouth Portuguese American Citizens Club on June 7.

The community of Portsmouth has come together to support the victims and their families following the devastating incident.

According to her obituary, Kelly was an exceptional teenager with a passion for musical theater, known for her roles as Rizzo in “Grease” and Sister Mary Lazarus in “Sister Act.”

Her voice and presence on stage captivated many, while her quick wit, kindness, and love for animals made her a cherished friend to all.

The accident occurred when the concrete landing connecting the exterior stairwell to the building’s second-floor entrance gave way, trapping Kelly and another girl underneath.

The other teen, 17, remains in critical condition. Several others sustained injuries, including a 19-year-old woman from Little Compton, who was recently released from the hospital, and a 49-year-old woman from Merrillville, Indiana, still hospitalized with serious injuries.

To honor Kelly’s memory, a GoFundMe campaign has been created, raising nearly $100,000 by June 12.

Local business Grafik Coffee has also produced “Portsmouth Strong” stickers, with proceeds going to the families of those affected.

St. Barnabas Church will hold a Night of Remembrance on June 13, with a Celebration of Life planned for June 16 at Green Valley Country Club.

Donations in Kelly’s name are encouraged to be made to The Newport Children’s Theater, reflecting her creative spirit and compassion.
