Fatal Hampton hotel shooting death of Monica Rodriguez – Obituary

Monica Rodriguez, a 24-year-old woman from Newport News, was fatally shot early Tuesday morning at the Quality Inn located on West Mercury Boulevard in Hampton.

According to Hampton Police Division, officers arrived shortly after receiving a report of gunfire and found Rodriguez and an adult man suffering from severe gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to the hospital, but Rodriguez succumbed to her injuries by 2:20 a.m.

Police said the shooting occurred as the victims were walking to their hotel room when an unknown suspect approached and, after a brief confrontation, opened fire before fleeing on foot.

Investigators from the Major Crimes Unit are actively working the case and have urged anyone with information to contact authorities. The investigation is ongoing.
