Susan Spangler, 67, and her mother, Deloris Latshaw, 85, both residents of Somerset, lost their lives on June 12 when their vehicle was hit by a CSX train at a railroad crossing in Rockwood, Pennsylvania.
According to Somerset County Coroner Cullen Swank, Latshaw died at the crash site, while Spangler, who was driving, passed away later at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center. Authorities confirmed the familial relationship, identifying the women as daughter and mother.
The incident took place around 10:23 a.m. at the Bridge Street railroad crossing. State police reported that the SUV entered the crossing despite all warning systems operating correctly and was struck on the driver’s side by an oncoming CSX train.
Two crew members aboard the train, a conductor and an engineer, were unharmed. Emergency personnel from Rockwood and Meyersdale fire departments, along with Somerset Ambulance, responded to the call.
Autopsies for both victims were scheduled for June 13, conducted separately by Somerset and Cambria County coroners.
CSX issued a statement offering condolences and confirmed their full cooperation with the ongoing investigation, which remains under the jurisdiction of Pennsylvania State Police from the Somerset Barracks.
