Fatal Namibia lion attack death of Bernd Kebbel – Obituary
Bernd Kebbel, a businessman and wildlife conservationist, was tragically killed by a lion while staying at a luxury lodge in Namibia’s Sesfontein area near the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp on May 30, 2025.
According to officials from the Namibian environment ministry, Kebbel was ambushed by the lion as he stepped outside his tent to use the restroom. Despite efforts by fellow campers to scare the animal away, Kebbel died at the scene from the attack.
The Namibian Police confirmed they are conducting a full investigation into the incident. Following the attack, authorities euthanized the lion on June 1, determining it posed a continued danger to both residents and tourists.
Kebbel was well-known in Namibia for his philanthropic work and dedication to wildlife conservation. He had previously owned a business specializing in safari vehicle accessories.
The region is known for its population of desert-adapted lions, although recent droughts and human-wildlife conflicts have reduced their numbers. This tragic event underscores the risks faced by visitors and locals in areas inhabited by wild predators.
