Fatal Twin Cities car crash death of Reed Robert Schultz

Reed Robert Schultz, a 19-year-old from Savage, lost his life late Saturday night in a crash in Eagan that investigators believe involved alcohol.

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to the scene at the intersection of Highways 149 and 55 around 11:15 p.m. Authorities reported that both a Jeep and a car were traveling south on Highway 149 before they veered into the northbound lanes near the intersection.

Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered the Jeep had struck a light pole while the car ended up in a nearby ditch. Schultz, who was driving the Jeep, was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where he later succumbed to his injuries.

An 18-year-old passenger in the Jeep, identified as Finnian Thomas Cronin of Edina, suffered life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized.

The other driver, 20-year-old Jordan John Wieland of White Bear Lake, was behind the wheel of the car. He was also taken to the hospital but is expected to recover from non-life-threatening injuries. According to the State Patrol, Wieland is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities have not confirmed whether any of the individuals involved were wearing seatbelts. The crash remains under investigation.
