Fatal Montreat training accident death of Violet Caramella

Violet Caramella, a firefighter with the Riceville Volunteer Fire Department, died during a weekend training exercise in Montreat, North Carolina, according to the State Highway Patrol.

The fatal incident occurred when a utility terrain vehicle (UTV) crashed during the training session. Two other individuals were also injured and taken to a hospital, though their conditions have not yet been publicly disclosed.

Caramella had served with Riceville for one year and was also affiliated with the Skyland Fire Department. She was a student at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College and was known for her dedication to her family, public service, and her community.

Riceville Fire Chief Kelly expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, calling it a devastating loss for the department, the community, and Caramella’s loved ones. He emphasized that no words could fully convey the depth of grief they are experiencing.

Buncombe County officials echoed the department’s sentiments, noting that fellow firefighters responded immediately but were unable to save Caramella.

Caramella leaves behind her husband, two children, and a broader family within the emergency services community.

The Montreat Police Department and other emergency personnel also responded to the crash. Authorities have not released any further information about the other individuals involved in the incident.

Officials say more details, including memorial arrangements and opportunities for public support, will be provided in the coming days.
