Fatal Horry County head injury death of A’Kyri Bell

A’Kyri Bell, an 11-year-old girl, died from multiple blunt force injuries at a Carolina Forest hospital last week, according to the Horry County Coroner’s Office. Her death is currently being investigated as a homicide.

Bell, who lived in Texas, was staying at a residence on Sago Palm Drive, believed to be with her father’s cousin, when the incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Police responded to assist EMS at the scene off Highway 501 and Legends Drive.

Three women — Lakesha Burnett, 34; Alantis Thomas, 21; and Camisha McGaskey, 31 — were arrested and charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly interfering with the investigation by giving false statements and attempting to hide or destroy evidence related to Bell’s death. They were released to home detention after posting $5,000 bonds.

Investigators found mops, towels, and bedding in trash bags inside the home that tested presumptively positive for blood. Authorities reported no firearms or drugs were discovered at the scene.

Community activist John C. Barnett noted the ongoing concerns about local crime activity and promised to pursue complaints to address the situation.

McGaskey mentioned an upcoming hearing with DSS and hopes to regain custody of their children.

The investigation remains active, with further updates expected.
