Fatal Effingham County car crash death of Harland Neville
Harland J. Neville, 58, of Altamont, was identified as the man who died in a two-vehicle collision that occurred on Sunday afternoon, June 15, in Effingham County, Illinois.
According to officials, the incident took place around 4:16 p.m. on U.S. Route 40 near 1075th Street. Authorities reported that Neville was driving a pickup truck eastbound when, for reasons not yet known, his vehicle veered across the center line and crashed head-on into a westbound minivan.
Neville was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled by Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes.
Inside the minivan were a mother and her three young children, ages eight, four, and four months. The woman, who was driving, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana. Her children were all properly restrained in the vehicle and, after being taken to HSHS St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham, were later released from medical care.
The crash resulted in the closure of Route 40 between Country Club Road and Funkhouser Road for several hours, with traffic resuming around 8 p.m.
The Illinois State Police and the Effingham County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
