A veteran officer of the Tasmania Police has been identified as the victim in a deadly shooting that occurred while serving a warrant at a rural property in North Motton.

Constable Keith Anthony Smith, 57, was fatally shot on the job while accompanying another officer to enforce a court-ordered repossession of a home. The incident unfolded on Tuesday and resulted in the officer’s death at the scene.

Smith had dedicated 25 years to the Tasmania Police, beginning his service in September 2000 and graduating from the police academy in May 2001. He had received several honors throughout his career, including the Commissioner’s Medal in 2011, the National Police Service Medal in 2016, and the 20-year clasp in 2021.

Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams described Smith as a well-respected and committed officer, emphasizing the profound impact his loss will have on colleagues and the broader community. She extended heartfelt condolences to Smith’s wife and family, pledging continued support in the coming days.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff addressed the state, calling the incident a tragedy that has shaken Tasmania. He acknowledged Smith’s bravery and said the loss would be felt across every region in the state.

A 46-year-old man from North Motton, believed to be involved in the shooting, remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and is under police guard. Authorities have not yet filed any charges.
