Fatal Cordova drowning death of Leonardo Hackley
Leonardo “Leo” Hackley, a 3-year-old boy from Cordova, Alaska, tragically drowned after wandering away from his home late at night, according to Alaska State Troopers. His body was discovered early Monday morning in the muddy tidal flats near the shore.
The young boy had been missing for several hours overnight before search crews located him around 6 a.m. Leo had reportedly left the house unnoticed after bedtime, possibly drawn to the outdoors wearing his Xtratuf boots. His mother, Jade Hackley, said he likely went exploring, captivated by his curiosity and love for collecting rocks.
Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and Forest Service, joined in the intensive search effort. Despite the community’s quick response, Leo could not be found in time.
Jade Hackley described her son as bright, joyful, and wise beyond his years. She called him a miracle child, having arrived after multiple miscarriages. Leo was known for his playful nature, love for nature, and a deep bond with his younger brother, Hudson.
She recounted his excitement upon moving to Alaska from Michigan, remembering how he embraced the rainy weather with open arms on their first day.
An autopsy is being conducted by the State Medical Examiner’s Office to officially determine the cause of death, though drowning is suspected.
Leo’s passing has left a deep void in his family and the Cordova community, who remember him for his vibrant spirit and loving nature.
