Fatal Durham County car crash death of Rafael Castro
Rafael Castro, aged 40, was killed Monday evening in a multi-vehicle collision on N.C. Highway 98 in Durham County, North Carolina, just south of Falls Lake.
The crash occurred around 6 p.m. near the intersection of N.C. 98/Wake Forest Road and Boyce Mill Road. Authorities from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol arrived shortly after the incident was reported.
Initial reports indicate that Castro was driving a Chevrolet pickup westbound when he crossed over the centerline. His vehicle first sideswiped a Chevrolet Traverse before slamming head-on into a Chevrolet Tahoe coming from the opposite direction. The severe impact led officials to shut down the highway for more than three hours to allow for investigation and cleanup.
Rafael Castro was pronounced dead at the scene. He had no passengers in his truck, according to authorities. The drivers of the other two vehicles involved were identified as Edgar Gomez-Amador and Anna Marie Deaver. Details about their injuries were not made public, and it remains unclear if either required medical treatment.
Troopers stated that the crash was not influenced by weather or road conditions, as the pavement was dry at the time. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and additional findings have yet to be announced. N.C. 98 was reopened later the same evening.
