Fatal Washington County shooting death of Renee Gill
Renee Gill, 37, tragically lost her life during an overnight home invasion in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred at a residence on Eleanor Street in Smith Township near Burgettstown shortly after 1:15 a.m. when several masked men forcibly entered the home.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the intruders, dressed entirely in black and wearing masks, confronted Gill inside the house. During the altercation, her son, who is in his early 20s, came to her defense. Amid the struggle, one of the suspects brandished a weapon and shot both Gill and her son.
Emergency responders arrived quickly after receiving the call. Despite paramedics’ efforts, Gill died at the scene. Her son was rushed to the hospital and is currently expected to recover. A younger son was present in the home during the invasion but was unharmed.
Investigators are working to determine if the victims and suspects were acquainted. Trooper Rocco Gagliardi of the Pennsylvania State Police suggested there must be some form of connection, possibly familial, prior history, or work-related, since the assailants appeared familiar with the residence.
The suspects fled the scene before police arrived, and authorities are actively pursuing leads regarding their escape route. Police also noted that the calls from Gill and her son provided valuable information that helped the investigation.
Neighbors expressed shock over the violent event. Ernest Westerhoff Sr., a nearby resident who knew the family, said he believes the attack was not random and described feeling devastated by the tragedy.
State police confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community as the investigation continues.
