Fatal Jennings pedestrian crash death of Steve Lockhart
Steve Lockhart, 68, was killed on June 13 after being struck by a vehicle while using a wheelchair along Highway 367 near Jennings Station Road in Jennings, Missouri, according to local authorities.
The St. Louis County Police Department reported that the suspect, 19-year-old Brayan Medel of O’Fallon, Illinois, was arrested and has been formally charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death, as well as a separate count of leaving the scene of a crash.
According to the incident report, Medel was driving southbound on Lewis and Clark Boulevard when he hit Lockhart, who was traveling along the road’s shoulder. Lockhart died as a result of the collision.
Medel did not stop and continued driving, crashing into a van that was heading north and carrying multiple minors. One child and the van’s driver were transported to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
After the second crash, Medel allegedly fled on foot and was later discovered hiding in a nearby neighborhood on Edgewater Drive. During questioning, police say he admitted to losing control, hitting Lockhart, crashing into the van, and running from the scene.
Medel is currently held on a $100,000 cash-only bond, without eligibility for 10% payment.
