Fatal Aurora shooting death of Todd Patrick Smith

Authorities have identified Todd Patrick Smith, 58, as the man who died after being shot by an Aurora police officer during a domestic disturbance call over the weekend.

The incident took place Saturday evening at a residence located in the 15800 block of East Arkansas Drive. According to the Aurora Police Department, officers responded around 5:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a domestic conflict involving a husband and wife.

When officers arrived, the man, later identified as Smith, reportedly went into the garage. As additional officers engaged with him to gather information about the reported altercation, police say he retrieved a handgun from a toolbox. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, he allegedly pointed it toward the officers, prompting one officer to shoot him.

Smith sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following morning. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that his death was caused by a gunshot wound.

No officers were harmed in the confrontation. The officer who discharged their firearm has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

An independent review by the 18th Judicial District is underway to determine whether the officer’s use of force was justified. Meanwhile, the Aurora Police Department is also reviewing the incident to assess if department policies were followed.

At this time, there are no new developments in the investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with relevant information to reach out to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers, where anonymous tips may be eligible for a reward.
