Fatal Florida jet ski crash death of Luis Guevara

Luis Guevara, a 19-year-old minor league baseball player for the Baltimore Orioles, lost his life in a tragic jet ski collision off the coast of Florida, the team announced.

According to Florida officials, the incident occurred Sunday evening near Lido Key, just outside Sarasota. Guevara was riding a jet ski when it collided directly with another watercraft. He and another person were seriously injured in the crash and taken to a hospital, while two others sustained minor injuries.

Baltimore Orioles General Manager Mike Elias expressed the organization’s grief in a statement released Tuesday, calling Guevara “a cherished part of our team” and offering condolences to his loved ones and teammates.

The crash took place around 8 p.m. Sunday, as per the ongoing investigation. Authorities revealed that the two individuals with minor injuries had been riding the second jet ski involved in the collision.

Team representatives confirmed that Guevara was not alone on his watercraft but did not disclose the identities of the other individuals involved.

Guevara, a native of Tinaco, Venezuela, joined the Orioles organization in 2023 at just 16 years old. He started his career in the Dominican Summer League, where many young Venezuelan prospects begin.

Earlier this season, Guevara earned a promotion to Delmarva, the Orioles’ A-level affiliate. After 24 games and a brief appearance at Double-A Chesapeake, he was assigned to the Florida Complex League in Sarasota. His final game took place on Saturday, one day before the accident. The Orioles canceled their games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday following the tragic event.
