Fatal Savannah shooting death of Brittany Simoneau
Brittany Simoneau, a 40-year-old employee at Welsh Pawn Shop, died after an accidental shooting at the store on Monday morning in Savannah. The incident occurred when a customer attempted to sell a loaded firearm.
According to the Savannah Police Department report obtained by the Savannah Morning News, 74-year-old Roddrick Warren brought a 9mm handgun to the pawn shop located at 32 E. DeRenne Avenue. Warren stated he had removed the live ammunition from the magazine and replaced it with an empty clip before arriving.
While Simoneau was inspecting the handgun, she ejected the magazine and seemed to clear the weapon of any live rounds. However, police reviewing surveillance footage discovered she did not remove the bullet from the chamber.
After placing the gun on the counter, Simoneau moved toward the back of the shop to retrieve the money owed to Warren. At that moment, Warren picked up the firearm and pulled the trigger to release tension on the spring, causing the gun to discharge and strike Simoneau in the right arm.
The shooting was deemed accidental, and Simoneau later succumbed to her injury.
