Fatal South Bend shooting death of Jerry Barnette
A shooting at a gas station in South Bend has been ruled a justified homicide, with prosecutors opting not to press charges in the May incident that resulted in the death of 56-year-old Jerry Barnette.
Authorities reported that Barnette was found with gunshot wounds inside the Logan Quick Mart on the 300 block of South Logan Street and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A juvenile involved in the incident was later located at a Mishawaka residence with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries.
Investigators with the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit reviewed surveillance footage and other evidence, which showed that Barnette had initially spoken with the juvenile outside the store before following them inside while armed.
The confrontation escalated, leading both individuals to exchange gunfire.
After a full review of the circumstances, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the juvenile had acted in self-defense and declined to file any criminal charges.
