Fatal West Little River deputy shooting death of Kristofer Lazaro Laboy
Kristofer Lazaro Laboy, 24, was fatally shot by a Miami-Dade County deputy Tuesday afternoon outside an apartment complex in the unincorporated West Little River area.
Deputy Kelvin Cox, a 23-year veteran of the force, fired the shots after Laboy, who was driving a yellow Chevrolet Corvette, refused to stop for deputies attempting a traffic stop. Laboy exited the vehicle armed and was shot at about 5:15 p.m. near the Sunset Palm Villas Association complex.
Laboy’s father described his son as a good person and shared that Kristofer called him in a panic before the shooting, saying he was being chased and needed help. The father also questioned whether the shooting was necessary and if his son realized deputies were attempting to stop him.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting a standard investigation into the incident. Authorities are seeking witnesses and video evidence to clarify the circumstances.
