Fatal San Luis border crossing shooting death of Marco Antonio

Marco Antonio, a 30-year-old man from Yuma, Arizona, was shot and killed on June 16 while waiting in traffic to cross from Mexico into the United States near the San Luis port of entry.

Authorities in Sonora reported that the shooting occurred while Marco Antonio sat inside a dark gray Jeep SUV on Avenida Carlos G. Calles, also known as Avenida Internacional.

The ambush took place between Calles 5 and 6, just east of the official border crossing area.

The assailants, whose number remains unknown, opened fire on the vehicle, striking Marco Antonio through the driver’s side window.

Photos shared by local media revealed the aftermath of the attack, with investigators later collecting 14 shell casings and a bullet fragment from the scene.

A 1½-year-old child, believed to be Marco Antonio’s, was inside the SUV at the time of the shooting but was not injured. Mexican authorities placed the toddler in protective custody.

Military and police units responded shortly after the incident, but as of June 18, no suspects had been apprehended.

Officials also noted that Marco Antonio had a criminal record in the U.S. tied to weapons trafficking and was on probation as of September 2023.

The Sonora Attorney General’s Office is continuing its investigation into the motive and those responsible for the deadly attack.
