Fatal Broomfield police shooting death of Scott Hartley Hansen
Scott Hartley Hansen, 34, was shot and killed by Broomfield police officers on June 5 outside the nonprofit organization A Precious Child in Broomfield, Colorado.
Police were dispatched after a 911 call reported a man threatening self-harm in the parking lot of the nonprofit. Upon arrival, officers spotted Hansen armed with a gun. The department’s Crisis Negotiating Team and mental health Co-Response Team spent over three hours attempting to peacefully resolve the situation. The shooting occurred shortly before 1 p.m. after negotiations failed.
Multiple officers fired their weapons at Hansen. The Adams and Broomfield County Coroner’s office is still determining the official cause and manner of death. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave while the Critical Incident Response Team conducts its investigation.
During the incident, several people, including seven children, were evacuated from the area. Authorities have not confirmed whether Hansen had any connection to the nonprofit or its staff.
