Fatal West Valley City shooting death of Anderson Garcia Cabrera Jr
An infant, Anderson Garcia Cabrera Jr, lost his life during a mass shooting that took place at the WestFest event in West Valley City, Utah, on Sunday night. The incident also claimed the lives of three others, including a pregnant woman and a teenager.
Authorities have charged 16-year-old Matthiz Cantre Lauti Ioane-Register in connection with the attack. The charges include four counts of aggravated murder, five counts of discharging a firearm causing serious bodily injury, one count involving bodily injury, and three counts related to unlawful firearm discharge.
The violence began shortly after 9:15 p.m. when an argument erupted between two groups attending the festival. During the confrontation, Ioane-Register allegedly drew a weapon and opened fire, according to law enforcement.
Among those killed was 18-year-old Hassan Lugundi, reportedly the primary target of the gunfire, who was struck several times. Fnu Reena, a 41-year-old resident of West Jordan, was also killed by a stray bullet. Investigators later confirmed she was eight weeks pregnant at the time of her death.
Eight-month-old Anderson Garcia Cabrera Jr was another unintended victim of the gunfire. His family, devastated by the tragedy, is now seeking help to lay him to rest.
Two additional teenagers, ages 15 and 17, were injured but survived. Authorities stated that both were innocent bystanders who were not involved in the original dispute. They have since been treated and released from the hospital.
Investigators discovered that the firearm used in the shooting had been reported stolen in Louisiana. How the accused obtained the weapon remains unclear.
A responding officer discharged one round at the suspect but missed. City officials noted that the officer had a clear and secure backdrop behind the suspect, minimizing additional risk.
