Raymond Benedetti dies in fatal Vero Beach shooting.

Fatal Vero Beach shooting death of Raymond Benedetti.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office has identified Raymond Benedetti, 48, as the man fatally shot during a deputy-involved incident on Wednesday night. Authorities report that Benedetti had a history of mental health issues and substance abuse. Sheriff Eric Flowers expressed his condolences, calling it a tragic event and acknowledging the deputies’ swift decision-making in the face of a threat.

Deputies were investigating a vehicle theft reported by Benedetti’s mother, who claimed her son had stolen her car to acquire illegal drugs to aid his withdrawal symptoms. The vehicle was located, and a traffic stop was conducted. Upon approach, deputies encountered Benedetti and a passenger. While Benedetti initially complied, he began to reach into his pockets and waistband, acting as though he were looking for a weapon. Deputies repeatedly ordered him to show his hands, but Benedetti disobeyed, even charging at one of the officers, which led to the shooting.

The passenger in the vehicle did not engage in any aggressive actions and fully cooperated with the authorities. Benedetti was transported to the hospital but was declared dead shortly after. Investigators later discovered that Benedetti had 23 felony arrests in his past.

Following the incident, the two deputies involved were placed on paid administrative leave. One deputy had been with the sheriff’s office since December 2024 and had six years of previous law enforcement experience, while the other has been with the department since November 2021. The sheriff’s office is reviewing body-worn and dash camera footage, which is expected to be released soon.
