Yobani Cardova-Hernandez, a 27-year-old man from Dalhart, Texas, was killed late Monday night in a head-on collision with a semi-truck in Dallam County.

The accident occurred just before midnight on US Highway 87, northwest of Dalhart and roughly 86 miles from Amarillo. Authorities say Cardova-Hernandez was driving a Chevy Impala when, for reasons yet to be determined, he crossed into the opposite lane and crashed into an oncoming 18-wheeler.

The force of the impact caused both the sedan and the semi-truck to overturn and catch fire. Cardova-Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the crash.

The 21-year-old truck driver, a resident of Richardson, was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Emergency crews responded promptly to extinguish the flames and clear the roadway, resulting in temporary closures along the highway.

The crash is currently under investigation, and officials have not yet released further details regarding the circumstances that led to the wrong-way collision.
