Fatal Mt. Zion train accident death of Hannah E. Claghorn

Hannah E. Claghorn, age 19, was identified as the victim who lost her life after being struck by a train in Mt. Zion on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at the Baltimore crossing where Claghorn was riding her bicycle southbound along the bike trail when the collision happened.

According to Mt. Zion Police Officer Larry Brooks, the train’s lights, horn, and bell were active as it approached, but Claghorn either failed to see the train or misjudged her chance to clear the tracks.

Emergency responders from Mt. Zion Police, Long Creek and Mt. Zion fire and ambulance services, and the Macon County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene.

The Baltimore and Westside crossings were closed for several hours during the investigation but have since reopened.

Once the local police complete their investigation, the case will be handed over to the railroad for further review.
