Fatal Indian River County shooting death of Raymond Benedetti
A man shot during a law enforcement encounter in Indian River County on Wednesday night has been identified as 48-year-old Raymond Benedetti, officials confirmed.
The incident took place in the Gifford area after deputies from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle connected to a narcotics investigation. The car had been reported stolen by Benedetti’s mother earlier that same day, and deputies used license plate reader technology to locate it.
According to statements from the sheriff’s office, Benedetti allegedly stopped cooperating during the stop and was seen reaching toward his waistband. One deputy fired at him, and when Benedetti reportedly advanced toward the deputy, he was shot again. He later died at a hospital.
Officials have not confirmed whether Benedetti had a weapon. Sheriff Eric Flowers stated that the confrontation was monitored by the department’s Real Time Crime Center.
Sheriff Flowers explained that after the initial shot, Benedetti made additional movements, prompting further gunfire as the deputy backed away and sought cover.
The sheriff’s office later revealed that Benedetti had a history of mental health challenges and substance abuse. Records showed 23 felony arrests and eight convictions in his past.
Two deputies who were involved in the incident have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
Sheriff Flowers expressed sympathy for everyone involved, noting that deputies were forced to act quickly in what he called a dangerous and rapidly evolving situation.
