Fatal East Hollywood police shooting death of Victor Manuel Carrillo

Victor Manuel Carrillo, 27, was fatally shot by officers in East Hollywood early Thursday morning after a burglary incident that escalated into a confrontation with law enforcement.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers from the Rampart Division responded shortly after 4 a.m. to reports of a suspect attempting to break into apartments on Alexandria Avenue. Carrillo was seen near a second-floor entrance and reportedly threw pieces of lumber, ceramic pots, and other objects at officers while armed with a knife. Police attempted to subdue him with less-lethal munitions, but Carrillo fled and broke into a second-floor apartment through a window.

Inside the apartment, Carrillo confronted officers wielding a knife and a metal chair, prompting officers to open fire. He was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. The knife, chair, and lumber were recovered and secured as evidence.

During the incident, one officer was struck by lumber but refused medical treatment. Additionally, two residents suffered minor injuries during a struggle with Carrillo while he tried to enter their apartment; one was treated by paramedics and the other declined treatment.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
