The Philadelphia Police Department has identified two individuals connected to the fatal shooting of Derwin Darnell Joseph Matthews Jr., a tragic incident that occurred subsequent to the city’s Pride celebrations. Investigators named Nysheem Hinson-Rakley, aged 22, and Tyrik Ransom, aged 24, as the suspects. These two are actively sought by authorities.
Police reports indicate that Nysheem Hinson-Rakley was last seen near the 900 block of Parrish Street, while Tyrik Ransom was located in the vicinity of the 7100 block of Buist Avenue according to the department’s information. The connection between these individuals and the fatal shooting remains under investigation by police.
Derwin Darnell Joseph Matthews Jr., known affectionately by friends as Derwin West Prodigy, was 31 years old. He sustained critical injuries, specifically a gunshot wound to the stomach, in the early morning hours of June 2nd in the 200 block of South Camac Street. This occurred several hours after the conclusion of the Philadelphia Pride March and Festival in the city’s Gayborhood area. Despite rushed medical efforts at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Mr. Matthews Jr. succumbed to his injuries at approximately 6:20 a.m. that morning.
Jacen Bowman, the president of Philadelphia Black Pride and a prominent figure in the House and Ballroom Community, offered a poignant reflection on the loss. He remembered Derwin Darnell Joseph Matthews Jr. as a dear friend known for ten years. Mr. Bowman expressed profound shock and disbelief, noting that his last interaction with the victim was during the very Pride celebrations that preceded the shooting. He stated feeling emotionally overwhelmed, struggling to find words to express his grief and the sense of sudden loss.
