Fatal southwest Atlanta car crash death of Lawrence Perrino
Police had to close a major stretch of westbound I-20 for several hours following the tragic accident in the southwest Atlanta region. The collision occurred at the beginning of the morning commute around 3:20 a.m. at the Lee Street exit.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office officially confirmed the identity of the deceased to our news team, identifying him as Lawrence Perrino, a 35-year-old man. Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene of the devastating crash.
Investigators at the scene noted that multiple vehicles were involved in the initial collision. Channel 2 Action News observed rescue teams carefully working amidst at least four vehicles, including a large tractor-trailer truck. According to preliminary reports from law enforcement, the first impact occurred between a Ford Focus and a Ford Ranger.
This initial crash created a chain reaction that led to the involvement of a third vehicle. The driver of the stopped tractor-trailer was identified as Perrino, who was operating his Ford Expedition. Tragically, Mr. Perrino succumbed to his injuries immediately after the collision.
The thorough investigation required to process the scene and determine the full details of the accident resulted in the highway being shut down for several hours. All travel directions on I-20 were eventually cleared by 7 a.m. this morning.
Authorities continue to gather evidence and piece together the complete sequence of events leading up to the collision. Road crews worked efficiently to clear the debris and restore normal traffic flow as safely as possible.
