The court heard that Kurtev, who was transporting his work colleagues, including his wife Sofka Mitkova, to their factory job, performed a “highly hazardous” maneuver to make up for being significantly late. The A16 road, known for its flat profile and straight alignment, offered no justification for the risky overtaking undertaken by Kurtev, which was captured on dashboard cameras inside his vehicle.
This dangerous maneuver resulted in a catastrophic head-on collision with an oncoming car driven by Cameron Marshall, a professional HGV driver. The other passengers in Kurtev’s vehicle, who were not wearing seatbelts, suffered severe injuries, forcing some to seek refuge back in their home country.
Kurtev received a concurrent sentence of 36 months for three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and an additional 27 months for injuring Marshall, which are served simultaneously with the main sentence.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge emphasized that the conditions were not conducive for overtaking, and the maneuver Kurtev undertook left little room for a safe return should the collision have been imminent. The judge also indicated that Kurtev might face deportation upon completing his sentence and a five-year driving ban.
The tragic incident left Marshall and his family devastated, profoundly impacting their lives in the United Kingdom. Kurtev expressed remorse for the outcome, acknowledging his responsibility for the dangerous driving that led to the fatal collision.
