Fatal Ka’u woman’s drowning death
Police are investigating a possible drowning that occurred on Sunday afternoon at Naalehu. The victim, identified as Stacy Coon, a 59-year-old from Oroville, California, is the subject of the ongoing inquiry.
Around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, law enforcement received a report concerning a swimmer in distress at Whittington Beach Park. Observers stated they had seen a woman swimming in the ocean, approximately 40 yards from the shoreline, before she started screaming for assistance.
Multiple onlookers entered the water and managed to bring her to the shore, but she quickly lost consciousness. The bystanders initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until emergency medical services personnel arrived at the scene.
Despite the resuscitation attempts, Coon remained unresponsive. She was transported to Ka’u Hospital where medical examiners pronounced her deceased.
An autopsy has been requested to determine the precise cause of death.
