Casandra Nicole Chavez Martinez dies after deputy vehicle collision on El Rucio Road
El Rucio Road rollover crash claims San Antonio woman’s life
Casandra Nicole Chavez Martinez, a 25-year-old from San Antonio, was driving a Freightliner truck when she died following a collision with a Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit on the northbound lanes of U.S. 281 near Linn, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The fatal incident occurred Thursday at approximately 4:23 p.m. on El Rucio Road.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that the patrol vehicle was on the shoulder lane when it was struck by Martinez’s truck on the outside lane.
“[Martinez] lost control after being sideswiped,” the DPS release indicated. “This caused the patrol unit to be dragged briefly before the truck itself veered off the road, flipping and rolling.”
Martinez suffered a partial ejection and died at the scene.
The male deputy involved received minor injuries.
Northbound lanes of U.S. 281 were closed for traffic rerouting via Texas Highway 186 for approximately four hours.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is conducting an investigation into the crash.
