Fatal Hudson River drowning death of Eric Chugchillin
Spring Valley’s 19-year-old, Eric Chugchillin, was identified as the individual discovered deceased in the Hudson River. The incident occurred at Haverstraw Beach State Park on Wednesday, when Chugchillin entered a deeper section of the water, according to the New York State Police. He was reportedly ambulating in the river and ventured into an area where the current submerged him past his head. His companions attempted to assist, but he submerged beneath the surface and did not resurface.
Emergency services arrived at approximately 4 p.m. and initiated a search operation. Specialized dive teams meticulously scanned the water for an extended period, while other units, including marine teams, a helicopter, and drones, conducted aerial and surface searches from above.
Chugchillin’s body was eventually located and retrieved just prior to 6:30 p.m. Authorities are cautioning recreational users that even seemingly tranquil waters can harbor hazardous currents beneath the surface.
