The Montgomery County Forensic Examiner has officially confirmed the identity of the cyclist who was fatally struck by a motor vehicle on Allentown Road in Upper Gwynedd Township earlier this month. The deceased is identified as John Erven Stone, aged 55, residing in the 1400 block of Oxford Circle. The official cause of death was determined to be a severe spinal injury, specifically the separation of the spine from the skull base, often termed internal decapitation.
Local authorities have stated that Stone likely suffered an immediate fatality from the collision. Upper Gwynedd Police initiated an investigation, and this case is being reviewed by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s office to decide on potential charges against the operator of the involved vehicle. The incident occurred on June 12 at approximately 5:57 p.m. when police responded to a traffic accident involving a bicycle and a 2019 Honda sedan at an intersection. According to preliminary reports from law enforcement, both the Honda and Stone were proceeding along Allentown Road from Valley Forge Road toward Broad Street. Stone attempted a left turn onto Green Street, veering into the path of the oncoming car, resulting in a direct impact from the front driver side. The forensic findings support that Stone did not survive the collision.
Allentown Road remained closed to traffic until 10:12 p.m. that evening. Eyewitnesses reported that several bystanders administered emergency CPR at the scene before the arrival of police and VMSC Emergency Medical Services. Additional support came from VMSC EMS personnel, members of the North Penn Area Crash Response Team, and Montgomery County detectives.
Investigators are actively seeking any available witnesses or surveillance footage to aid in their ongoing probe.
