Charles Helmka dies in fatal Town of Wallkill car crash

Fatal Town of Wallkill car crash death of Charles Helmka

A 52-year-old man from Dracut, Massachusetts, Charles Helmka, was pronounced dead at the hospital following a serious collision on Interstate 84 in the Town of Wallkill on Friday morning.

According to State Police, the incident occurred around 8:35 a.m. on Friday. Troopers reported that a 2008 Honda Accord, driven by Josanne Pottinger-Smith, a 53-year-old from Newburgh, was traveling westbound on the highway. This vehicle collided with a 2014 Harley-Davidson motorcycle being operated by Helmka, who was also heading westbound.

Both vehicles involved in the accident were pushed off the main road and ended up in the shoulder median. Helmka, who was on the motorcycle, did not sustain any injuries before being taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill. However, upon arrival at the medical facility, medical examiners confirmed that he had passed away. Josanne Pottinger-Smith received treatment for minor injuries and was released from the hospital.

The Town of Wallkill Fire Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office provided support at the accident scene alongside State Police officers. Authorities stated that their ongoing investigation is seeking additional information from anyone who might have witnessed the collision or has any relevant leads.
