Fatal San Diego (405) Freeway car crash death of Jesus Garcia

On Saturday, authorities confirmed the identity of the 34-year-old man killed alongside a veteran Los Angeles Police Department officer on the San Diego (405) Freeway. The sergeant, Shiou Deng, stopped his vehicle to provide assistance after the man was injured in an earlier collision.

CHP reports responding officers from the West Los Angeles station arrived at the southbound freeway near Moraga Drive around 2 a.m. Their initial call was for a single-car accident involving a disabled Toyota pickup. The vehicle was found abandoned in the carpool lane and the fast lane.

Upon assessing the scene, Sgt. Deng activated emergency lights from his marked patrol car and stopped behind the disabled pickup. As he exited his vehicle to offer help, a driver named Mario Bickham lost control of his Nissan sedan. The car struck the patrol vehicle before撞击ing Sgt. Deng.

The collision also resulted in the death of Jesus Garcia, who was standing beside the disabled pickup at the time. Emergency medical personnel transported Sgt. Deng to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Bickham was taken to a hospital via ambulance, but his condition was not immediately reported. A fundraising page created by Garcia’s family describes him as a “caring family man whose generosity touched everyone he met.”

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stated the sergeant “made a split-second decision to stop and render aid.” He noted Deng activated his rear lights to warn following traffic and ensure safety. The sergeant, promoted to his current rank two years ago, spent most of his 26.5 years with the department working in the Mental Evaluation Unit.

Jesus Garcia was killed along with LAPD Sgt. Shiou Deng on June 23.
