Fatal Scott County shooting death of Jetavion Johnson

A Mississippi man faces murder charges following the death of an 18-year-old man during a gender reveal celebration at Roosevelt State Park. According to reports from WLBT and Gray News, Anthony Boyd is accused of fatally shooting Jetavion Johnson.

The incident happened at the state park located in Scott County. Sheriff’s deputies reported that multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen were sustained by Johnson before emergency medical services were able to transport him to a hospital. Despite attempts to save his life, Johnson did not survive his injuries.

Deputies explained that Johnson and Boyd were acquainted through the woman who organized the gender reveal party. The investigation suggests an altercation began between the two men in the swimming pool area, escalating from a verbal disagreement.

A witness at the park during the event described the sudden violence: “Without warning, the shooter opened fire rapidly,” stated Jacob Howell. “There were immediate screams and a rush to escape.”

Howell, who was visiting with his family, added that he provided assistance to several people, including children, as they evacuated the immediate area.

Local residents in Scott County are expressing profound sadness and shock over the tragic incident that occurred during a planned celebration for an upcoming birth. “It’s baffling how such a joyous occasion can turn into something so horrific,” expressed Trevor Blaylock. “This needs to stop. Violence has no place in our community.”

Despite the disturbing nature of the event, authorities are emphasizing that the state park remains a secure environment for visitors. Sheriff Mike Lee confirmed this was a singular occurrence that should not be misconstrued as a reflection on the park’s overall safety.
