A Canadian national, who was in the process of being deported after a conviction, passed away while in federal detention in South Florida. Johnny Noviello, aged 49, lost his life on Monday at the Federal Detention Center situated in Miami, as confirmed by a statement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The circumstances surrounding his demise are currently being examined by officials.

He was held by immigration agents awaiting deportation from the country. The authorities reported that Noviello entered the United States in 1988 through legal entry and was granted permanent residency status in 1991. In 2023, he was found guilty of drug-related offenses and additional charges, leading to a one-year prison sentence. His arrest occurred when immigration officers picked him up at his probation facility the previous month, and he was deemed removable due to his criminal background.

This incident marks another death in a federal detention facility this year, with officials noting that seven similar occurrences have been reported so far in 2025. Additionally, eleven fatalities were recorded in the same setting during the entire year of 2024. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the exact cause of Noviello’s death.
