Marjay Dotson dies in fatal Chicago shooting
Fatal Chicago shooting death of Marjay Dotson
Following a tragic shooting at Douglass Park on Thursday evening in Chicago’s North Lawndale district, a youth was deceased and another minor was wounded. Authorities have placed a park service employee in temporary detention. The injured youth is connected to a well-known figure from a previous incident.
Chicago police reported that two boys, aged 14 and 15, were present in the park area adjacent to the swimming facility on South Sacramento Street around 7 p.m., shortly after the recreational site closed. An unidentified individual discharged a firearm at them. A source from the fire department indicated that a park guard was the person who fired the weapon, reportedly while performing routine duties.
The younger boy received a neck injury and the older one suffered a wound to the back, according to law enforcement. Both were transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. The family of the 14-year-old stated he survived surgery but remains in a critical state. They also noted his familial link to Laquan McDonald, a case from earlier.
Regrettably, the 15-year-old succumbed to his injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the identity of the deceased as Marjay Dotson.
A fire department insider mentioned that the shooter was adjusting a bicycle when he abruptly began shooting. The reasons for this action are not yet known.
In response to the incident, the Chicago Park District announced that the Douglass Park swimming area will be shut down on Friday, though other sections will stay open as planned.
City leaders, including Mayor Brandon Johnson and the park superintendent, convened with employees and attendees at the facility on Friday morning.
The Park District issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and collaboration with the police investigation. They also mentioned providing support services to those affected.
No formal charges have been filed up to this point.
Investigators from the fourth district of the police are continuing their probe.
