James Scott Grigory dies in fatal Leon County shooting
Fatal Leon County shooting death of James Scott Grigory
A Leon County law enforcement officer sustained injuries when an individual fired upon them during a home standoff connected to the death of a man’s mother. The suspect, identified as James Scott Grigory, a 38-year-old man, claimed responsibility for killing his parents before turning the weapon on himself and a family dog. The incident unfolded in rural Leon County on June 21.
Deputies from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, accompanied by a Texas DPS trooper, responded to reports of a potentially suicidal person who allegedly confessed to murdering his parents. Upon arriving at a residence on County Road 456 near Normangee, officers attempted to approach the suspect. Grigory opened fire, hitting the deputy once in the face and once in the arm. The injured officer was airlifted to a hospital and remains in stable condition, awaiting surgical intervention.
A shelter alert was activated for nearby residents as authorities established a perimeter. DPS SWAT and Texas Rangers managed the scene during the standoff. Grigory reportedly informed law enforcement that he had already killed his parents, prompting a welfare check in Harris County, where officers discovered a woman, believed to be the suspect’s mother, deceased from gunshot wounds.
After several hours, DPS SWAT entered the Normangee home and found Grigory dead from what officials describe as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His father and a dog were also found deceased. Authorities have not released the names of the deceased parents. The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, and Houston County deputies assisted with local emergency calls.
