Fatal Phillips County shooting death of Kolton Griffith
PHILLIPS COUNTY, Kan. — An altercation during a routine arrest attempt claimed the life of Phillips County Deputy Brandon Gaede on Friday evening. Reports detail that the deputy was responding to a tip about unauthorized pyrotechnics when the incident unfolded. While securing a suspect named Kolton Griffith, 27, from Phillipsburg, a physical encounter resulted in the suspect drawing a weapon and firing. Despite being struck by Gaede’s returned gunfire, the suspect, Kolton Griffith, died at the scene. Gaede was transported to a hospital but did not survive his injuries. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has requested the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office take over the probe into the fatal shooting, which remains active. The 30-year-old deputy leaves behind his spouse and three minor children.
