The suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Charles Samuel Urbach, was taken into custody without incident after canine officers assisted in a search and apprehended him following a confrontation.
Dispatched to a residential area in the 2200 block of Cortez Road around noon, officers responded to an anonymous report concerning an unusual individual observed moving through backyards. K-9 units were involved in the search, leading to the discovery of the suspect concealed in a nearby water feature. During the encounter, the suspect became aggressive and inflicted an injury on a canine officer before being placed in the patrol car.
Once secured in the vehicle, the individual experienced a sudden loss of responsiveness. Emergency medical services were immediately notified and transported him to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed his death at 2:42 p.m. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has stated that the investigation is ongoing and will rely on findings from the medical examiner to establish the cause.
