Columbia County authorities announced charges against a driver following a fatal May collision on Georgia’s I-20. Basheenia Vasalate Lee, a 48-year-old, was booked into jail on Wednesday after her arrest.
The accident occurred on May 29, involving a 2018 Kia Soul and a 1994 Chevrolet C2500. Both vehicles, driven by Lee, were approaching from the east near mile marker 189. Investigation revealed Lee admitted to dozing off and leaving the roadway before regaining consciousness.
According to the official report, she then veered sharply to the left and collided with a side guard rail. The vehicle subsequently rolled onto its passenger side, ejecting the passenger. Mario Mallory, identified by authorities, was taken to Doctor’s Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on June 4, with official medical pronouncement at 12:05 p.m.
The crash report assigns responsibility to Basheenia Vasalate Lee. Her charges include second-degree homicide by vehicle and failure to remain in the lane of travel, as recorded in jail documentation.
Richmond County and Burke County officials planned a joint press conference for Monday to provide further information regarding this incident.
