Howard Hawkins, the father of the deceased, expressed his fond memories of his son, focusing on his love for his granddaughter and his desire to give her the best opportunities. He described his son as someone who always brought joy and positivity to those around him.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, June 26, 2025, at the intersection of U.S. 20 and Utah Street, where an SUV was struck by a train. This collision resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including Bryon Towns, who was ejected from the damaged vehicle.

Bryon Towns, aged 21, was the youngest child in Howard Hawkins’ family. His father highlighted his strong determination and commitment to providing for his daughter, often working long hours before she was born. In the year leading up to the accident, Towns achieved his high school diploma and driver’s license, goals he had set for himself.

Howard Hawkins shared a photo of his son with his infant daughter, noting that Towns was in a relationship with Sherise Parrish, the baby’s mother. They had a daughter together, and both parents tragically lost their lives in the accident.

Following the crash, which happened around 10:02 p.m., Howard Hawkins learned of his son’s death the next morning. He initially dismissed the news as a joke but later confirmed it through the Lake County Coroner’s Office, which assisted with identification due to the multiple fatalities.

In the aftermath, Hawkins has remained occupied with his business, Merrillville Beauty College, and has shared stories about his son with family and friends as a way to cope. He advised focusing on positive memories rather than conflicts, emphasizing the importance of cherishing joyful moments.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office reported that all five victims resided in the same area, the 4000 block of E. 7th Avenue. Community members generously donated items for the baby, including essentials like diapers and formula, demonstrating widespread support.

Howard Hawkins has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses, which had raised $2,650 by Monday afternoon.

Gary officials, including Mayor Eddie Melton and Common Council President Lori Latham, extended their condolences and reminded residents to exercise caution at railway crossings to prevent future accidents. The South Shore Line and Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District confirmed no injuries and are investigating the incident, urging the public to follow safety guidelines.
