Fatal car crash death of Cathy Hewett
Columbus police confirmed the identity of a woman killed when her vehicle collided head-on with a large truck on the city’s west side.
The 75-year-old passenger, Cathy Hewett, succumbed to her injuries at OhioHealth Doctors West Hospital following the collision. Police reported the incident in a statement.
Initial reports indicated a female driver operating a Lincoln Town Car heading north on Georgesville Road at approximately 12:42 p.m. on June 30th attempted to turn left onto Automall Drive. According to authorities, a southbound Freightliner semi-truck subsequently struck the driver’s side of the smaller vehicle.
The Lincoln’s driver, who suffered serious injuries, was airlifted to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Hewett was pronounced deceased at the hospital shortly after the collision.
The truck operator drove himself to the Doctors West facility for examination. Police released this information regarding the third party involved.
Columbus Fire officials noted both car occupants required assistance to be removed from their vehicle. The semi-truck driver received immediate medical attention at the scene. Fire Battalion Chief Jeffrey Geitter provided this update on the rescue operations.
Due to the severity of the accident, southbound traffic on Georgesville Road was halted while law enforcement gathered evidence. A dispatcher confirmed the road was reopened at 5:07 p.m.
