The official identification of the deceased person from last Sunday’s incident at Lake Wateree has been announced by the local Coroner’s Office. David West, the head of the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office, formally identified the deceased as a 62-year-old resident from Lancaster County named David Cunningham.
According to the authorities involved, the drowning tragedy began when the victim made the decision to enter the water from a boat. This decision was made around 2:50 p.m. in the vicinity of the dam. Following his initial emergence from the water, there were reports from officials indicating that the man submerged again before help arrived.
A coordinated search operation was launched promptly. Responders from multiple agencies joined forces in the rescue efforts. These agencies included the Kershaw County Fire Service, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office. Their combined expertise was crucial in the ongoing search for the missing person.
Tragically, the search culminated in the recovery of the body. Specialized divers successfully located the deceased. This solemn discovery took place at approximately 10:45 p.m. on the night of the incident, bringing an end to the urgent search that had been underway for several hours.
