Frank Harwood Died in Fatal Ambush
Battalion Chief Frank Harwood, who was 42 years old, passed away in a tragic incident on Canfield Mountain. The death occurred during an ambush.
According to fire department officials, Harwood was a veteran firefighter, having served for seventeen years. He was described as a dedicated individual to his community and family. Harwood was a husband and father to two children. He had also served in the Army National Guard.
The fatal ambush took place on Sunday, June 29th, 2025, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Firefighters were responding to a brush fire on Canfield Mountain when they were unexpectedly targeted by sniper fire. Two firefighters lost their lives in this attack.
One of those killed was Battalion Chief Frank Harwood. The other firefighter’s identity was not immediately released. Harwood was involved in a prolonged shootout with law enforcement before the suspect, Wess Roley, shot himself. Roley was twenty years old at the time.
The bodies of the deceased firefighters were transported from Kootenai Health to Spokane. A procession carrying them was arranged on the day following the fatal ambush incident.
