According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, a minor has been formally charged with attempted manslaughter following the deadly incident on Monday morning that left 19-year-old Janiyah Batey in a critical medical condition.

Evidence gathered by law enforcement suggests that Demario Anderson, a 16-year-old, and another 16-year-old suspect, alongside two unidentified individuals armed with weapons, attempted to commit a robbery against Batey. In the midst of a conflict, shots were exchanged between the parties involved. Police indicated that Batey’s bullet wound was the cause of Anderson’s death.

Janiyah Batey sustained injuries from the returned gunfire and managed to drive away, but she later crashed her vehicle shortly after. A 16-year-old survivor involved in the incident confessed to approaching Batey while wearing a face covering and brandishing a firearm, according to the authorities.

The ongoing probe is focused on identifying the other two suspects present during the events.

In earlier reports, homicide investigators were examining the fatal overnight shooting of a 16-year-old male on Dickerson Pike, which was linked to a separate incident where a 19-year-old female was critically wounded in the same area.

Emergency personnel located Demario Anderson, who was 16, deceased in a parking garage at the 3700 block of Dickerson Pike. Multiple spent shells were discovered at the scene.

Responding officers found Janiyah Batey inside a damaged car on Dickerson Pike and transported her to a medical facility in a very serious condition.

Investigators believe the teens planned to meet at the apartment complex when the violence broke out. The reason for the shooting remains under scrutiny.
