A law enforcement officer has tragically lost his life following a severe motor vehicle collision reported in Wilkes County, North Carolina.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol units arrived at the accident scene in the early evening hours of Friday, June 27th.

Initial reports from the ongoing investigation indicate that a Jeep Liberty, piloted by a 62-year-old man identified as Randy Lee Johnson, crossed into the opposing lane of traffic. This resulted in a direct impact with a Nissan Altima. The driver of the Altima, Jonathan Andrew Laws, a 34-year-old member of the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Department, sustained serious injuries during the impact. He was transported by air ambulance to a regional medical center where his condition unfortunately deteriorated, leading to his death from his injuries.

Tragically, the occupants of the Altima were not the only fatalities. A passenger seated in the back seat, Vickie Gustafson Key, aged 72, also lost her life in the incident. Both Randy Lee Johnson, the driver of the Jeep Liberty, and Vickie Gustafson Key were pronounced deceased at the accident site.

Two additional individuals who were inside the Altima managed to survive the collision. They were transported to medical facilities for treatment, though their injuries were described as not immediately life-threatening.

The official investigation into the cause of this fatal accident concluded that neither excessive speed nor the influence of alcohol were contributing factors.
